Accessing Benefits for Children - ABC

The ABC Project acts to improve health and reduce the number of uninsured children in Los Angeles County. The Project works with families, schools, and community agencies to enroll children in Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, and other coverage programs. ABC also promotes the Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) program as a means of increasing access to healthcare for low-income families.

Activities
The ABC Project's primary goal is to increase the number of children enrolled in Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, and other free and low-cost health programs.

ABC Outreach Workers work at various sites throughout South Los Angeles, Compton, Inglewood, Lennox and Hawthorne. Outreach Workers provide five types of services.

  • Outreach
  • : Provide parents with a brief summary about the insurance programs that are available
  • Enrollment/Application Assistance
  • : Give step-by-step assistance to families in completing one or more applications for health coverage
  • Follow-Up
  • : Call clients who received initial application assistance at 3 months, 6 months and 11 months to answer any questions about enrollment, using services, and application renewal
  • Troubleshooting
  • : Help families access benefits or complete paperwork whether they received application assistance from the ABC project or not
  • Referral
  • : Provide information and the name of another agency to help an individual resolve needs identified by ABC staff.
